How long does a CPR class take?

It depends on the format you choose. Plan for half a day for a traditional class, or about an hour if you do the online portion first.

There is no single answer, because the AHA offers a couple of formats. Here is how the time breaks down.

Traditional in-person class

A full instructor-led class runs about 3 to 4 hours. That includes the lessons, video segments, hands-on practice on manikins, AED practice, and your skills check. First-time Heartsaver and BLS classes usually land in this range.

Blended learning (online + skills session)

With blended learning you complete the knowledge portion online at your own pace beforehand, then come in for a short hands-on skills session of about 1 to 2 hours. You still practice and test in person — that part can never be done online — but it shrinks your time in the room.

Renewals are faster

If your card is still current, a renewal class is typically shorter than a first-time class. More on that in does CPR certification expire?

How to plan

  • Short on time? Ask about blended learning.
  • Prefer to learn it all at once? The traditional class is the way to go.
  • Group at your workplace? We can come to you across Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and Lake Charles.
